When and Where to Flyfish for Cod in Australia?

Cod season in Victoria and NSW runs from December 1 to August 31, giving flyfishers a generous window to plan their trips.

Summer and autumn offer the best conditions for surface flyfishing, especially during warm, still evenings. Cod can still be targeted in winter, though they tend to hold deeper and respond best to slower retrieves.

Popular rivers for targeting cod on fly include:
Mitta Mitta River – Cold, clear flows with deep gorges ideal for stalking cod in summer
Ovens and King Rivers – Healthy populations with accessible banks and plenty of structure
Goulburn River below Eildon – The lower reaches hold surprisingly large cod.
Murray River – Broad, snag-rich water with massive potential

What Makes Murray Cod Unique?

The Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii) is Australia’s largest native freshwater predator. It can grow to over a metre and dominates its territory through brute strength and ambush tactics. Cod typically hold tight in cover, waiting to explode on unsuspecting prey.

Flyfishing for cod isn’t about numbers — it’s about moments. You’re casting to the one fish that might move all day, and the reward is often an unforgettable surface eat or bone-jarring take on a deep jigged fly.

Each cast demands focus, each retrieve carries tension, and every eat has the potential to stop your heart. Add in the stunning Aussie settings, from the boulder runs of the Upper Mitta to the redgum-lined bends of the Murray, and it’s easy to see why so many flyfishers fall hard for the cod game.

Best Fly Gear for Murray Cod

Fly Rods

You need stopping power, accuracy and the right taper to turn over big flies. The Vision Down Under Cod/Natives Outfit is purpose-built for Aussie flyfishers chasing cod. For a standalone option, the Vision Down Under 10wt Fly Rod handles bulky flies and heavy lines with ease.

Fly Reels

Cod are powerful, and a smooth drag helps absorb shock when they turn back toward cover. The Redington Behemoth offers serious torque for the price, while the Vision XLV balances well on heavier rods and provides consistent performance. The Redington Grande adds machined precision and top-tier drag in a durable design.

Fly Lines

Line choice shapes your presentation. For tight structure and shallow runs, the Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan Intermediate Sink Tip is a shop favourite. In low-light or surface scenarios, the Sonar Titan Jungle Clear Tip keeps things stealthy. For deeper water, the Sonar Titan Triple Density Sink 3/5 or Full Intermediate models track true and get down quickly.

Flies

Cod eat with commitment. Ozzy Native Flies patterns like the Frog Popper, Purple/Black Cod Snack and Chartreuse Cod Snack are tied to move water and draw violent eats. For maximum motion, Paolo’s Wiggle Tail Fire & Tiger delivers serious flash and profile. Not sure where to start? The Staff Picked Fly Selection – Murray Cod gives you a hand-curated box that’s ready to fish straight out of the shop.
