When and Where to Target Estuary Perch and Bass on Fly

The warmest months are when perch and bass really switch on. From late spring through to early autumn, surface flies become a reliable option — especially in low light. Topwater action around dawn and dusk can be explosive, while the heat of the day calls for slow-sinking patterns or jig flies worked tight to structure.

Both species thrive in very different habitats depending on where you are in Australia. For Australian bass, try:
• Clarence and Macleay Rivers (NSW) – rugged, wild stretches ideal for floating lines and surface work
• Shoalhaven and Nepean Rivers (NSW) – tidal reaches with heavy structure and consistent bass
• Glenbawn Dam (NSW) – known for big bass, ideal for float tubes or kayaks
Upper reaches of QLD’s coastal rivers – perfect in late summer after rain
• Snowy River (VIC) – known for big bass and Victoria's best system to target them.

For estuary perch on fly in Victoria head to:
Bemm River – ideal around structure and edges
Hopkins River – fish around rocky points and submerged timber
• Albert Park Lake – Yep, our local! Heaps of esturay perch on offer - especially on muggy evenings. Try a pink fly!
• Brackish estuaries and slow rivers in the Otways and Gippsland

Why Estuary Perch and Bass Are Worth Chasing

Bass and perch flyfishing offers a raw, underrated thrill that rivals any native species in Australia. These fish hit with force, hold tight in heavy cover and demand precision from every cast. Their power might surprise those used to trout, but it’s exactly that strength and unpredictability that keeps flyfishers coming back.

Perch often feed subtly — a quick bump near a weedline or shadow pocket might be all you get. Bass, on the other hand, are surface assassins. Their blow-ups under overhanging timber or along rocky banks are aggressive, unmissable moments. Both species reward the flyfisher who’s willing to observe, adapt and keep casting long after others would move on. As more Aussie flyfishers look for challenges closer to home, bass and estuary perch have earned their place in the year-round fly calendar.

Best Fly Gear Setup for Estuary Perch & Aussie Bass

Fly Rods

Aussie perch and bass demand gear that can cast with precision and muscle through structure. A 6 to 8-weight fly rod is ideal — heavy enough to throw bulky flies and turn fish away from snags, but still sensitive enough to feel subtle eats. For maximum versatility, many flyfishers run a two-rod setup: one rigged with a floating line for topwater work, and the other with an intermediate or sink tip for probing depth and current seams.

Fly Reels

Fly reels aren’t under serious pressure with perch or bass, so your priority is a light, balanced model. A sealed drag is handy but not essential unless you’re in mixed-species water where mulloway/jewfish bycatch will run harder. Match it with a 9-foot fluorocarbon leader in the 10 to 12lb range. If you’re in areas with aggressive tailor, it’s worth swapping in a short bite tippet of 20lb or light wire to avoid bite-offs.

Fly Lines

Floating fly lines are your go-to for surface poppers and gurglers. When bass or perch go deep, intermediate or slow sink tips get your flies where they need to be. For a full rundown of top-performing gear, shop our perch and bass fly range online or in-store at The Flyfisher.

Flies

Bass and perch respond well to movement, profile and tempo. Surface flies like gurglers, foam bugs and small poppers work best in low light around overhanging banks, while subsurface patterns like weighted streamers and baitfish imitations shine during the day. There are many great selling points for fishing estuaries. The ocean is close by, birds and sand dunes, waves crashing in the distance. Walking sand flats instead of mud-lined shores. And the perfect setting for fish & chips at the end of the day.
