A private learn to flyfish day for veterans, run by The Flyfisher with Melbourne RSL as part of the Veterans Who Flyfish program.
No experience needed and no gear needed. Just turn up ready for a day outdoors and we'll take care of the rest.
Who it's for
This day is for veterans who've been accepted into the Veterans Who Flyfish program through Melbourne RSL. Whether you've never picked up a fly rod or you had a go years ago and want to start again, it's pitched at beginners.
What you'll learn
- Casting basics, from the ground up
- Setting up a rod, reel and line, and tying the knots that matter
- Flies, and what trout actually eat
- Reading the water to find where fish hold
- Wading safely
- Putting it all together and fishing
What's supplied
Rods, reels, lines, flies and waders are all provided. We carry a good range of wader sizes, so fit won't be a problem.
Small group, proper attention
Groups are capped at 10 with two instructors, so you get plenty of time with a guide. Our instructors are first aid trained and the day is fully insured.
Cost
The full fee is $249 including GST. Melbourne RSL covers $200 of that, so your contribution is $49.

Fishing licence
You'll need a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence unless you're exempt. Many veterans are, depending on the card they hold, including the Victorian Veterans Card and the Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Card. If you need one, a short term licence is cheap and quick to buy online. We'll make sure you know where you stand before the day.
Can't make it?
Life happens. If you're sick or can't attend, we'll move you onto another date rather than have you lose your spot.
Our take
Flyfishing is a great excuse to get outside, slow down and spend a day with good people. This program is about giving veterans an easy, well supported way into the sport. We're proud to be part of it, and we'd love to see you on the water.
