Sumo Hopper Claret - Barbless
This classic English Hopper fly effectively imitates a wide range of food sources, and is sure to entice a reaction strike before the fish even know what hit them! From the alpine lakes to the low-lying creeks of Victoria, this versatile pattern is sure to put fish in the net.
When it comes to dry fly fishing, the Sumo Hopper is by far my most effective dry fly. This pattern is tied with a loosely dubbed body and a slightly oversized hackle at the head to give a large profile on the surface. Trout sitting high in the water often take this fly intuitively, as well as when they're feeding on buzzer, beetle or daddy long legs. Super effective on large UK reservoirs such as Rutland and Chew Valley, but more so on high-altitude lakes such as Llyn Clywedog and Llyn Brenig where terrestrial insects are in abundance. The Jenkins' Black Sumo Hopper is available in both size 10 and size 12 to help you best match the hatch. Tied on Fulling Mill Barbless Hooks.
