The needle is pushed into the end of the fly line, allowing the leader butt to be threaded through the fly line before being secured with a nail knot. This creates a particularly neat connection for trout fly lines.
It's also a useful tool when making your own braided loops from braided mono, including replacing damaged factory loops on heavier saltwater fly lines such as 8 weights and above.
