The key to the Stillwater Float is its 45 ft head combined with considerably more weight than a conventional floating line. Scientific Anglers has overweighted it by two line sizes, giving it the mass to turn over long leaders, teams of flies and heavier lake patterns without resorting to an overly short, aggressive taper.
That longer head also makes it a great choice when distance matters. It provides plenty of line to carry in the air before shooting, making it well suited to covering large expanses of water from the bank or boat.
For indicator nymphing, the fully floating design keeps the line on the surface for easy mending and line control. The heavier taper also helps turn over an indicator, long leader and multiple nymphs—a combination that can be difficult to cast effectively with a standard trout taper.
