The McPhail Grey Wulff is a larger adult mayfly imitation with a high floating, bushy profile that sits beautifully in the surface film. It is a great pattern when trout are looking up for mature mayflies, duns and larger greyish adults.
For local fishing, this is a very handy Kozzie Dun pattern, especially on rivers such as the Swampy Plains and Upper Mitta when fish are locked onto those bigger mayfly hatches. It is also well worth carrying for Goulburn hatches, where Kozzie Duns can bring good fish up and feeding confidently.
The Grey Wulff is not a fussy one hatch only pattern. It is a strong generic adult mayfly that gives trout a clear, visible target. Fish it on its own when trout are rising, or use it as the dry in a dry dropper rig when you need something buoyant enough to hold up a small nymph.
A great choice for this year’s hatch, and one of those dry flies you want in the box when bigger mayflies start coming off.
Best for: Kozzie Dun feeders, adult mayfly hatches, searching likely water and fishing buoyant dry fly rigs.
