As a beginner, fly choice seems like everything and, ‘What did you get it on?’ is probably still the most asked question in fly fishing. The best fly depends on your target species and water conditions. For trout, Fulling Mill dry flies like the Royal Wulff or Tiewell’s Parachute Adams are excellent. For saltwater, Manic Tackle Project shrimp flies perform exceptionally.
Victoria’s trout fishing often favours Fulling Mill nymphs like the Pheasant Tail, Tiewell’s Woolly Bugger, and dry flies such as the Kakahi Queen by Manic Tackle Project. These patterns suit local streams and lakes.
Fly size depends on water clarity and prey type. Smaller flies, like Fulling Mill’s size 18 dries, suit clear streams, while larger streamers are better for murky waters. Match your fly to local insect activity.
The Woolly Bugger is a beginner’s favourite. Use Tiewell’s fly-tying materials for a simple and effective start. This versatile fly works across species like trout, bass, and even Murray cod.
Match your fly to the fish’s natural prey. For Australian waters, consider Ozzy Native Flies for Murray cod or Fulling Mill’s caddis patterns for trout. Observing local conditions helps refine your choice.
Dry flies like Fulling Mill’s Adams or The Flyfisher’s Bassano Possum Emerger excel for surface-feeding trout. Subsurface, the Hare’s Ear or Copper John nymphs deliver consistent results. Adjust to trout behaviour and conditions.
