Sage on their SALT R8 rods...
Most salt rods are built for pure power and ultimate strength—that is table stakes for the venue and the discipline. With our new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to our six-weight. We increased the pure pulling power without the need to add more material, fillers or reinforcement. The outcome is simple, providing the ability for faster landing times and reducing fish stress and catch-and-release pressure on ever so delicate ecosystems.
More strength and fight were an obvious upgrade, yet few salt rods, especially in the heavier weights, achieve the importance of feel for fine touch shots and precise presentations. Shaping a taper that brought this increased touch into the equation took more time. Yet after a long residence in the birthplace of saltwater fly fishing, and working directly with the experienced guides there, our rod designers found the right profile and fiber alignment that delivered strength, fine touch presentation, and a more intuitive sweet spot to a class of rods that have long had a reputation as unwieldy, unforgiving and difficult. With the SALT R8, gone are the days of sacrificing the feel and touch in your saltwater rod.
Sage on their Enforcer Fly Reel...
Born of the performance of our renowned THERMO big game bluewater reels, the Sage ENFORCER has been updated and fine-tuned for the power, reliability, and durability needs of the saltwater flats angler. Designed with peak performance in mind, the ENFORCER offers everything the flats angler needs in a reel, whether taming the explosive runs of double-digit Bonefish or putting the brakes on the freight train pull of triple-digit tarpon. Simply put, this is the ultimate saltwater reel for flats and heavy-duty fly-fishing applications.
But battles on the flats are exercises in nuance and chaos, so we’ve beefed up the O-rings and drag plates for added durability, consistency, and reliability. Maximum drag has been increased by 50% over the ENFORCER’s predecessor, the SPECTRUM MAX; you’ll find eight pounds at the arbor in the 7/8 size, 15 pounds in the 9/10 size, and 17 pounds at the arbor in the 11/12 size. For saltwater anglers fishing heavy tippets who don’t want to let fish run continuously—or who care enough about their fingers to avoid palming fast spinning spools—this increased drag allows them to get most out of their reel without sacrificing any metacarpals.
• 50% Higher Drag Than SPECTRUM Family
• Enlarged and Improved Seals
• Increased Durability
• More Rigidity
• New Radius Cornered Reel Foot
Scientific Anglers on their Amplitude Smooth line...
For most applications, we'll be selecting this line. The Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam.
FLY LINE
NOTE: As you checkout, if you'd prefer a different line (non-floating or otherwise) you can add notes to your order. Alternatively, give us a call on (03)96211246 and we can discuss line options more dialled towards your fishery.
The Amplitude Smooth series of lines are, simply put, the highest-performance smooth fly lines in the world. With up to five times less drag and eight times the durability of traditional lines, this will change the way you look at fly line performance. Tarpon. Bonefish. Permit. All in one day. All on one fly line. That’s the idea behind the Amplitude Smooth Grand Slam, a line designed specifically to help you achieve one of angling’s most elusive accomplishments. With a short, powerful head the Grand Slam cuts through wind and turns over crabs, shrimp, and tarpon toads with ease. We’ve got the line. You just need the fish.
Backing
We'll have it spooled up, rigged and ready with the highest quality Cortland Gel-Spun backing. Gel-Spun backing (normally $99.95+) is essential for saltwater, allowing enough capacity to keep them connected and abrasion resistance like no other material there is.
CHOOSING A LINE WEIGHT
We offer this outfit in line weights 8-12 to cover all the different flyfishing styles and situations you're likely to encounter in saltwater or heavy freshwater.
As an analogy, there's no one golf club that will get you through a full round easily... and flyfishing isn't dissimilar. We select an appropriate line weight that will suit the majority of situations we're likely to fish.
In choosing a line weight, the most important thing to consider is the weight of the fly (or rig) you want to cast. For example, if you're fishing a big surface fly, half the size of a chicken, you'll get it out far easier with a 10 weight than you will an 8 weight. What follows is a summary to divide each line weight to help you choose.
Of course, we've tried to keep this as simple as possible. If you'd like further or more in-depth advice based on where you're fishing, feel free to give us a call on (03)96211246. This isn't buying broccoli at the grocery store - it's far more important... and fun! Just remember that we're here to help and we love talking flyfishing... so get in touch!
8 Weight Outfit
This is the ideal line weight for the vast majority of in-shore saltwater flyfishing, or for fishing for smaller natives in rivers like Murray Cod and bass. With an 8 you'll be well equipped to cast most lighter weighted streamers and shrimp/crab patterns. For bonefish in skinny water - this is the ideal line weight. For barra - we prefer the 8 over anything else because of the amount of casting involved.
9 Weight Outfit
If you can only see yourself doing the very occasional saltwater trip and are positive you'll only ever invest in one complete saltwater outfit - then go the 9. You'll have just enough grunt to tackle some of the larger species and flies - yet it's light enough you can cast all day without too much fatigue. For deeper flats bonefishing, such as that encountered in Aitutaki or Exmouth, this is the ideal line weight.
10 Weight Outfit
We love 10 weights at The Flyfisher. There's very little they can't do and for Aussie species like permit, golden trevally, and longtail tuna, they're ideal. Throw heavy crab patterns with ease, big cod surface flies no worries, flex some muscle out of the boat with bluewater species, the 10 does it all.
12 Weight Outfit
The big dog. When flyfishing gets extreme, this is what you want. Think GT's, Caribbean Tarpon, bluefin tuna, and billfish. The 12 is not a rod you'd want to be casting all day but when there's a big predator that presents itself, you'll have the bazooka for a bazooka fight.
