Choosing the right fly fishing reel can significantly impact your experience on the water. Two common types are cast and machined fly fishing reels, each with distinct advantages. Here's a quick guide to help you decide which one suits your needs.
Cast Reels: Made by pouring molten metal into a mould, cast reels are affordable and easy to produce. However, they may have small imperfections that reduce their durability and bend and crack easier when dropped. Some of our favourite cast reels include: Lamson Liquid S, Sage Spectrum C and the Vision Hero
Machined Reels: Carved from solid blocks of metal, machined reels offer superior strength and precision. This process results in a lighter and more durable reel, ideal for the hardcore flyfisher. Some of our favourite machined reels include: Orvis Mirage LT, Lamson Litespeed M and the Vision XLS
Cast Reels: More prone to damage if dropped and usually heavier, cast reels are good for beginners or light use. They perform well for casual fishing but may not last as long in tougher conditions.
Machined Reels: Machined reels are highly durable and can withstand the demands of larger fish and rough environments. They’re also lighter, making them easier to use over long fishing sessions.
Cast Reels: Generally more affordable, cast reels are perfect for beginners or flyfishers on a budget.
Machined Reels: More expensive due to the precision manufacturing process, machined reels are an investment for flyfishers who need durability and top performance.
Cast Reels: Best for budget conscious flyfishers who aren't putting their reels to the test in wilderness environments
Machined Reels: Ideal for the adventurous flyfishers who don't want a reel to let them down under the most testing circumstances
