Bassett's Stonefly Exponent

$3.95

A modern stonefly nymph designed by one of New Zealand’s top competitive anglers, the Bassetts Stonefly Exponent is built to get down quickly and produce eats from large, wary trout.

  • Realistic stonefly profile for larger, high-protein food sources
  • Tungsten bead for fast sink rate
  • Slim, efficient design for Euro and NZ-style nymphing
  • Subtle, natural look suited to clear and pressured water
  • Ideal as a point fly or larger attractor pattern

Developed by New Zealand fly fishing champion Ollie Bassett, this pattern reflects years of fishing backcountry rivers for big, sighted trout. It’s designed to imitate dislodged stoneflies—one of the most important food sources in many freestone systems.

The slim profile helps it cut through the water column quickly, making it ideal for Euro nymphing or fishing NZ-style under a dry. It’s particularly effective early and late in the season, when trout are willing to move for a bigger meal and will often travel to eat it.

Fish it as a point fly to get down fast, or as a larger anchor pattern to carry a smaller nymph behind it. It’s a reliable option when targeting quality fish in clear, technical water.

Who is this for?

Perfect for trout anglers fishing Euro or NZ-style nymphing, especially in freestone rivers and backcountry settings. Ideal when targeting larger trout, sight fishing, or when you need a fly that gets down quickly and draws confident eats.
